Olive Pollen Allergy: Genes and Environmental Factors
نویسنده
چکیده
This article summarizes the most important advances of recent years in the fi eld of gene−environment interaction in allergic response. It specifi cally examines sensitization to olive pollen as an example of one of the main causes of allergic disease in the Mediterranean area. The presence of at least 20 proteins with allergic activity has been demonstrated in olive pollen, and 10 of these have been characterized (Ole e 1 to Ole e 10). Ole e 1, which is considered to be the majority allergen (causing sensitization in more than 70% of patients), has been the subject of many studies looking for risk factors and ways to protect against sensitization. Markers of the major histocompatibility complex and other genetic loci associated with the allergic response have been analyzed using population-based, family-based, and functional approaches, which have revealed the involvement of genetic regulation in this type of response. Furthermore, evaluation of environmental factors and their relationship with genetic factors is essential when attempting to understand this type of disease. In this review, we provide examples of how exposure to high doses of olive pollen allergen in a specifi c genetic context can trigger different allergic conditions (from asthma to nonresponse). We stress the importance of evaluating these factors in order to modulate this response correctly.

Food allergy due to olive.
We report the case of a 28-year-old man who presented palatal itching and genaralized urticaria following ingestion of olive 3 years after being diagnosed with olive pollinosis. The patient did not have a history of food allergy or urticaria. The results of skin prick tests with aeroallergens including latex were positive for house dust mite and olive pollen. The results of prick tests and pric...
متن کاملDesensitization effect of preseasonal seven-injection allergoid immunotherapy with olive pollen on basophil activation: the efficacy of olive pollen-specific preseasonal allergoid immunotherapy on basophils.
BACKGROUND It has previously been demonstrated that subcutaneous immunotherapy with allergoids positively affects clinical and immunological parameters even after 7 preseasonal injections. However, its effect on basophil activation remains unclear. We investigated the effect of preseasonal allergoid immunotherapy on basophils and concomitantly assessed its clinical and immunological efficacy in...
متن کاملOlive Pollen Exposure and Sensitization Patterns
Background: Very high levels of exposure to olive pollen in the south of Spain lead to differential allergen sensitization profi les. Therefore, new approaches to allergen standardization, diagnosis, and vaccination are necessary. Methods: Quantifi cation of minor allergens in extracts, component-resolved patient diagnosis, and IgG4 individual allergen responses were used to evaluate new strate...
متن کاملThe allergenic structure of the thaumatin-like protein Ole e 13 is degraded by processing of raw olive fruits.
BACKGROUND The thaumatin-like protein (TLP) Ole e 13 in raw olive fruit is responsible for occupational allergy in olive oil mill workers. However, these workers do not experience allergic symptoms after ingestion of edible olive. OBJECTIVES To analyze the presence of IgE-reactive TLP in raw and edible olive fruit and to assess the allergenic potency of both sources. METHODS The content of ...
متن کاملAirborne olive pollen counts are not representative of exposure to the major olive allergen Ole e 1.
Pollen is routinely monitored, but it is unknown whether pollen counts represent allergen exposure. We therefore simultaneously determined olive pollen and Ole e 1 in ambient air in Córdoba, Spain, and Évora, Portugal, using Hirst-type traps for pollen and high-volume cascade impactors for allergen. Pollen from different days released 12-fold different amounts of Ole e 1 per pollen (both locati...
